CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of over 100 compounds found in cannabis and hemp. It is one of the two most prevalent compounds in cannabis. CBD is in a class of molecules called phytocannabinoids. It is non-intoxicating and non-psychotropic.
Cannabinoids that come from plants are classified more specifically as phytocannabinoids. Interestingly, our bodies also naturally produce similar cannabinoids called endocannabinoids. In fact, scientists have found that human breast milk itself is a rich source of endocannabinoids 2-AG and anandamide.
Beneficial cannabinoids can be derived from both hemp and marijuana, but unlike marijuana, hemp is a cannabis plant with low to negligible levels of THC and does not have any psychotropic or intoxicating effect that can give people the sensation of being “high”. The classification of hemp and marijuana varies in different countries and jurisdictions. In Thailand, while marijuana is still classified as a controlled substance, cannabis plant with lower than 1% THC is considered as hemp. Cannabis extracts with lower than 0.2% THC is considered as hemp, and it is a non-controlled substance. Product produced with hemp CBD extracts can be sold in any retail store and distribution channel legally.
Researchers have been studying CBD’s numerous health benefits since it was first discovered in 1940. Studies point to CBD as having a wide range of therapeutic benefits, ranging from overall immune system support to strong antioxidant and neuro-protective abilities. Whether or not CBD can help you is a question best answered through individual exploration.
The “entourage effect” refers to the synergy achieved by all the components in the hemp plant working in combination.
These compounds work together to enhance the potential benefits of the plant. Each compound can amplify the therapeutic properties of the others while mitigating their potential side effects. This is not only limited to cannabinoids, but also terpenes and flavonoids.
